The short version
Halloween, 1987. Three teenagers took a dare, climbed the iron fence of the Blackwood house, and never came out. Thirty-nine years later, the church bell tolls three times, and it's your turn to open the gate.
The Last House on Hollow Street is a small indie horror game for Windows PC from Red Planet Apps. You walk the street, the house, the cornfield and the barn in first person, in the dark, with headphones on. The house remembers you. It's never the same night twice.
The long version
Sarah Bell, Tommy Reyes and Jack Aldous were sixteen, sixteen and fifteen. The search was called off when the tunnels flooded. Their posters are still taped to the gate.
Now it's your night. Walk up the flagstone path through the fog, past the pumpkins on the neighbors' steps, the car left in the road with its door open, and firecrackers going off somewhere down the block. Step into the foyer where the clock stopped at 12:07. Sit in the parlor with the phone that shouldn't ring and the radio that talks about you. Climb to the child's room, the sewing room, the bath of black water, and the attic that is longer than the roof outside. Go down the little door under the stairs, to the cellar and the wall someone bricked up from this side.
Then go past the house, if you dare: the dirt road into the dead corn, the 1987 harvest maze, the barn across the fields where a patrol car still has its door open and its light turning, the 12:07 train that crosses the field once a night with its windows full, and an old well that goes a great deal further down than a well should.
The house learns you. Sign the guest book on the porch and it will use your name: on the walls, on a flyer, in a voice. Come back another night and it remembers how the last one went, where you ran, what you hid from, and the thing that froze you comes back for you.
She hunts by sound. Eleanor Blackwood has been waiting a hundred years for a guest. Run and she hears you. Hide, hold your breath, and listen to her listen. And when the crows, the owls and the dog next door all turn to look at you, she knows exactly where you are.
She isn't the only one in there. A tall man in a railway coat. An undertaker who keeps time in the barn. Scarecrows that aren't on their posts. Something living in the tunnels under the street, counting. There are ten endings, and when you've found them all, there's one more night, from somewhere you never expected to stand.
On October 31st, the house knows what night it is.
Key features
- A house that learns you. Sign the guest book and it uses your name. It remembers how your last night went.
- Never the same night twice. More than a hundred things the house can do, and it picks its own handful each night.
- She hunts by sound. Run and she hears you. Hide, hold your breath, and listen to her listen.
- Ten endings. Some only open if you do something no one would think to do. Some only if you keep coming back.
- Every line spoken. A full cast, a choice of narrator, and a house with a voice of its own.
- One street, one house, one night, and beyond. Cellar and tunnels, corn maze, barn, and a well that goes too deep.
- Sound-led horror, best in the dark with headphones. The house goes completely silent before the worst of it.
- Streamer Mode. Let Twitch chat vote on what the house does next. Off unless you turn it on, and it only reads chat, never posts.
- Startle setting. Jump scares Full, Reduced or Off, switchable any time (F2).
- Comfort options. Calm or turn off head bob, screen shake and swaying; field of view; a center dot; hold-to-press or toggle for every held action.
- Subtitles and audio control. Three subtitle sizes with an optional background, narration speed, and separate volumes for voices, ambience, effects and scares.
- Full controller support with on-screen prompts for the pad in your hands.
- Seven interface and subtitle languages: English, Spanish (Latin America), Brazilian Portuguese, German, French, Russian and Japanese. Voices in English.
- Continue the night. A night you didn't finish waits for you on the title screen. Graphics presets from Low to Cinematic, picked for your PC on first launch.
- Optional microphone. The house can hear how loud you are. Only loudness, only while you play, nothing recorded or sent. Off unless you turn it on.

Good to know
Content notes: flashing light (lightning, flickering lamps; never faster than three flashes a second), sudden loud sounds, things that come at your face out of the dark, children who died and a house that grieves, spiders, snakes, scorpions, rats and insects, distant gunshots and firecrackers. No gore. Not for younger players.
The first launch prepares the game's graphics for your PC and takes a minute or two. Windows may show "Windows protected your PC" the first time: click More info, then Run anyway.
